The One: My Foundation Matches

Last year was the year of great foundations. I was able to find my new favorite foundation, and I ventured out and checked out some other foundations along the way. I thought I'd share some of the foundations that I tried with y'all, and include swatches (because, what's a makeup post without swatches?). It should be noted that my arm and my face aren't exactly the same color, but I used my arm for the purposes of swatching multiple shades.

Foundations & Shades That I've Worn:

1) Kat Von D's Lock It Tattoo Foundation in Deep 74
This has literally been my best match ever, and I came across it by checking out different foundation reviews on YouTube. This video by NeneTanae sold me on it. I love how the foundation is long-lasting, and gives me a matte yet skin-like finish. You can see it in action in My Foundation Routine video.

2) Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation in 355 Coconut
This is the best drugstore foundation that I've yet to come across, and it was a little under $6 at Walmart. The color matches me pretty well, and while it doesn't last as long as I'd like it does the job for a regular, dregular, schmegular day. Maybelline recently expanded their shade selection for the Matte + Poreless collection, adding about 8 shades (a few of which are WOC friendly). So if you were unable to find your perfect match, now might be a good time to try again.

3) MAC Pro Longwear Foundation in NW47 at MAC (I've also been matched to NW45)
I thought this was a great match until I tried the Kat Von D Foundation. I now feel like this shade in Pro Longwear makes me look kinda ashy. Plus I like the lil glow the Kat Von D foundation gives me. Funnily enough, on my arm it looks like a perfect match...however I didn't buy it to wear on my arm LOL.

4) NARS All Day Luminous Foundation in "New Guinea."
Since I'm an oily girl, I should have known better than to mess with any "luminous" or glowy foundation. I wore this one summer day, and melted within an hour. My oils + excess heat + luminous foundation = GIRL you shoulda known better. From what I recall, the match was decent...but I couldn't wait to take it off because I looked so oily.

5) Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation in R520 "Cinnamon"
Color match wise, it was ok...though I seem to recall feeling like it was a little too red on me (I wore it in my Fall Fashion Lookbook Video). My biggest problem with this foundation, was that my oils broke through too quickly regardless of which primer I used.

Foundations I've tried, but are not pictured (just to give you color matching ideas)

Black Opal Even True Flawless Skin Liquid Makeup in "Nutmeg" (not sure that this is my best match though, still trying to find THE ONE from this brand)

L'Oreal True Match in N8 Cappuccino (which was ok, I wasn't thrilled)

It should be noted that I have a pretty oily T-Zone, so I tend to prefer foundations that are matte.

So that's my foundation roundup y'all. What's your favorite foundation, and what shade do you wear? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I can swear you are my exact shade! To get your shade in black Opal. You'll have to mix Nutmeg and Beautiful

    1. Ooo, maybe I'll try that. I low-key hat mixing foundations, but I might pick those up lol

  2. I am your shade in all foundations mentioned but I wear black opals in hazelnut. Hope this helps and keep slaying with that black girl magic.

    1. Thanks! That does help, I might give it another try

  3. I'm the same skin tone as u!
What color do you wear in BB creams? What is the best primer? Thanks!

    1. I don't wear BB creams, so I don't think I could really help as far as a shade suggestion with those. You could try or the shade matcher on Sephora for a shade suggestion though. For primers, I have oily skin and I like to use Becca's matte primer in my t-zone and MAC's prep & prime on the rest of my face. Hope that helps!
