Pressure Makes Diamonds

2 Corinthians 4:7-12 says:

But we have this precious treasure [the good news about salvation] in [unworthy] earthen vessels [of human frailty], so that the grandeur and surpassing greatness of the power will be [shown to be] from God [His sufficiency] and not from ourselves.8 We are pressured in every way [hedged in], but not crushed; perplexed [unsure of finding a way out], but not driven to despair;9 hunted down and persecuted, but not deserted [to stand alone]; struck down, but never destroyed;10 always carrying around in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the [resurrection] life of Jesus also may be shown in our body.11 For we who live are constantly [experiencing the threat of] being handed over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the [resurrection] life of Jesus also may be evidenced in our mortal body [which is subject to death].12 So physical death is [actively] at work in us, but [spiritual] life [is actively at work] in you.

I want to focus on where it says that we are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed. That implies to me that we're in a high pressure situation...and you'd be surprised what kinds of things can be created under pressure. One of which, would be diamonds.

Diamonds are carbon in it's most concentrated form. By the way, Carbon is about 18% of our body weight, and it's one of the most common elements in the world. It's one of the four essentials for lifes exsistence. Common, but essential.

Diamonds form about 100 miles below earths surface, in the earths mantle which is molten rock. This enviorment provides the right about of pressure and heat to transform carbon into a diamond. To be specific, the carbon has to be placed under at least 435,113 pounds per square inch of pressure at a temperature of at least 2, 200 degrees Fahernheight. Anything less, and graphite will be created.
If it doesn't get exposed to a certain about of heat and pressure, it'll miss out on becoming what it's meant to be...and it'll become something less.

Sometimes you might feel like you've been forgotten, or buried underneath all your problems and situations...but don't give up! When things get hot, don't give up! When you give up, not only do you setting for recieving less...you also settle for becoming less than what God is making you into. No matter what it looks ore feels like, don't give up! God has a plan, this is intentional and it's all working for your good.

Galatians 6:9 says "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." Yeah we may get tired, and it might get hot, and it's a lot to deal with...but it's only seasonal. Fruit out of season can mess us up, if we get the right thing  at the wrong time, we're not ready to handle it. So much like the carbon, we have to be exposed to the right conditions to become a diamond. The right things, people, situations, the right about of heat and pressure in order for this diamond to be formed.

I promise, this isn't a bio lesson, but most of the diamonds that we see today were formed millions to billions of years ago. We see and are attracted to their shine now, but we forget the process that it went through to become a diamond. This reminds me of how God says that He knew us before we were even born, but that's another message for another time. Anyways, what usually brings diamonds to the surface is a powerful magma eruption, which basically pushes diamonds up through the earths mantle and crust in a few hours.

So even though your process may seem to be taking awhile, take joy in knowing that when it is your time (because your time will come!) you're coming out fast!

You've heard of iron sharpens iron right? (Proverbs 27:17), well because Diamonds are so hard they can only be scratched by another diamond. Nothing else can really affect or cut it. Eventually it gets cut, polished, and all those things. It goes through it's process, becomes what it was destined to become (because it stayed in the process), and then gets refined and polished. Don't forget where it started though, common, ordinary, but when it's exposed to the right amount of pressure and heat...it becomes something so beautiful.

No matter what part of the process that you're in today, don't give up. You may be pressed, but you're not crushed. Persecuted, but not abandoned. Struck down, but most certainly not destroyed.

So this morning, trust God to do what He promised. Your contents may be under pressure, but you're coming out of this a diamond!

Come Up A Little Higher

Last summer I went to Atlanta with some of my friends for a Christian conference. At one point on the way there, we experienced a little turbulence. The funny thing about turbulence is, while you never expect it (on that plane your voluntarily got on)...we know that it's always an in-flight possibility. The definition of turbulent, is something causing unrest, violence, or disturbance. It's characterized by agitation or tumult.

People often talk about God being the pilot, and them being the co-pilot...but quite frankly we don't even belong in the cockpit. When you see everything coming at you, and everything there is to deal with...you can start to panic. We need to calm down, quit tripping, and trust God to take us safely to our destination. If it get's rocky in the meantime, just sit down and buckle up.

Isaiah 43:4-7 says: Because you are precious in My sight, You are honored and I love you, I will give other men in return for you and other peoples in exchange for your life. 5 “Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east [where they are scattered], And gather you from the west. 6 “I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ And to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’ Bring My sons from far way And My daughters from the ends of the earth, 7 Everyone who is called by My Name, Whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made.”

Have you ever seen somebody try to open the emergency door in the middle of a flight? No. And do you know why? That'd be incredibly dangerous and crazy. In that same way, when God is flying the plane we have to buckle up and not try to get off before He gets us to our arrival destination.

That's how we miss so many things, because right when it gets hard, or it feels like it's taking too long, or we feel like we're barely hanging on....we're ready to let go. Don't you know that God says in His word that we're more than conquerors?

Don't be scared if you don't recognize the route God is taking you, or if it's different from previous things He's brought you through.

You've never experienced THIS kind of victory before.

Get ready! God hasn't forgotten you, or lost track. He's already been on the move!

Isaiah 40:27-31 says: Why, O Jacob, do you say, and declare, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord, And the justice due me escapes the notice of my God”? 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth Does not become tired or grow weary; There is no searching of His understanding. 29 He gives strength to the weary, And to him who has no might He increases power. 30 Even youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble badly, 31 But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] Will gain new strength and renew their power; They will lift up their wings [and rise up close to God] like eagles [rising toward the sun]; They will run and not become weary, They will walk and not grow tired.

I often wondered what made the eagle so special, that it is used for this illustration. Well, here's a few facts:

Eagles are built differently from other birds of prey.
They have a more powerful build, heavier head and beak, and they are larger. I can relate to that, You see, I discovered at an early age that I would never fit or blend in no matter how much I tried.

Eagles fly alone for the most part
Sometimes, God seems to be separating us from the others...so He can work on us and in us. It can feel lonely, but because He promised to never leave us or forsake us...we're never truly alone.

No other bird can reach the height, and they don't mix or socialize with other kinds of birds.
I think that's why they don't mix or socialize with like chickens, or pigeons. They're not built for the same stuff, they don't have the same destination. Lowkey, that's why we can't mix with everybody. We ain't all built for the same stuff, called to the same thing. Everybody ain't happy for you, some people are preying on you instead of praying for you...but y'all don't hear me. Learn to protect the anointing on your life.

Eagles have a keen eyesight, so they can spot prey from a distance. Once they see their target, they focus and go after it.
This too reminds me of myself. Sometimes my goals feel so big and far away, but I know that if God let me see it (and know that it's possible for my life), He's gonna let me get it. So my vision is locked, and I won't stop till I get it.

Eagles are powerful fliers, and soar on thermal columns (an atmospheric phenomenons that occur when air rises due to heat... we see these in storms). It uses the wind to help it soar, and it's the only bird that loves storms because it uses them to push them higher.
You see, this goes back to not mixing with everybody. The thing that God uses to push you higher, make you stronger, those storms, those trials could very well break or kill somebody else. Don't be discouraged, soar! Let God use that storm to push you higher!

Eagles don't eat dead things, they prefer fresh meat.
I don't know who told you that you could only have the leftovers of somebody else's dream or life, but the devil is a liar. Behold, God is doing a new thing in your life (Isaiah 43:18-19!)

Eagles are 3ft Tall, 15 lbs, and have an 8 ft wing span...but they can only lift about 3-4 pounds. They're not built to be heavy lifters.
Stop trying to carry, what God wants you to release. Cast your burdens unto Jesus, for He cares for you.

I don't know about you, but this morning I'm ready to come up a little higher, get a little closer, and soar into what God has for me.

I hope you're ready too.

Amen.

The Man. The Mission. The Motive.

Isaiah 53:3 says: But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

As we all know, Easter is coming up. As a Christian, this is one of the most joyful and holy holidays that my faith is built on. We recognize the greatest act of love and sacrifice by Jesus Christ for us all. Laying down His life, that we might have eternal life and not be separated from The Father
Jesus, who had humble beginnings, being born in a manger, belonging to a blended family (in that Joesph was not His biological father), being human like us, but also being The Son of God. Jesus, who performed miracles, fed the hungry, healed the sick, raised the dead, and lived a sinless life. Jesus who was talked about, persecuted, lied on, tempted, tested, mocked, brutally beaten, and crucified.

John 19 speaks about His crucifixion, and verses 28-30 say: Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. when he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

He willingly laid down His life with us on His mind, and stripped death and the grave of it's victory (1 Corinthians 15:55). 3 days later, when a couple of women went to look for Him in His grave, He was nowhere to be found.

Matthew 28:1-7 says: After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
2There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
5The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

A lot can happen in 3 days y'all, and while yes Jesus was doing the work of His Father all His life, somewhere between "It Is Finished" and "He Is Risen" everything changed for us. The rules changed. Instead of being separated from God, and having to go through doing certain things that we read about in the old testament (like making certain sacrificies and whatnot) to approach Him...now anybody can go through Jesus and be saved. No matter where you come from (or even who you come from), what you've done, how you've been living, our debts and sins payed by His Blood. This is that amazing grace that we so often sing about. This is the blessed assurance, that gives my soul peace. To know that by His blood I am covered, and by His mercy and grace I will make it through, and that one day His grace will me home.

The crazy thing about this grace, this mercy, this sacrifice is that it can't be earned. This fact kinda goes against what we find easy to understand, due to our human nature. It's easy to believe that we could possibly earn something great by being good, doing good things, being a good person...and I hate to burst your bubble but no matter how "good" you try to be your own goodness isn't what's going to get you into heaven.

Ephesians 2:8-9 says: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast

But why? Why would He do this? Why would a Man, who lived a sinless life choose to lay it down for billions of people who lived the quite the opposite. Why be beaten, mocked, and killed in effort to make provision for grace, mercy, and forgiveness for people that might not ever even acknowledge His sacrifice and gift, much less accept it.

Because, He loves us, far too much to leave us without hope and a future. Far too much to be eternally separated from us by sin and death. Far too much to leave you how you were when you first met Him. Far too much to abandon you. When Jesus rose again 3 days later, He rose victoriously and through Him God extends victory to us as well (1 Corinthians 15:57).

So this morning, if you aren't on the winning team...I invite you to join us. Know that Jesus loves you unconditionally, and everything that He did, He did for you. Amen.

Sunday Devo: God Moments

God moments, are those moments in your like where you can truly look back and see that God has taken cause all the things in your life to work together for your good. Like Joyce Meyer once said, God can do more for me in one moment that I can do for myself in my entire lifetime.

I know that one "Yes" from Him, changes everything. One word from Him can change everything. Proverbs 16:9 says: We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps. When God orders our steps, He takes even the hard, difficult, not so pretty pieces of our lives and works them into something beautiful. The thing is, when God orders our steps we have to surrender and be willing to follow us wherever He takes us.

At first, that may sound cool because we think about all the amazing places God will take us and we get excited (as we should, I don't know about you but I'm really excited about seeing what God has planned for my life) however the more you think about it, it may become a sobering thought because we realize that God may cause us to walk through some difficult places en route to the amazing places.

For example:

The psalmist? He walked through the valley of the shadow of death, but He knew God was with him to cover, lead, guide, and restore him.

Esther? She took that risky walk to the the throne of the king without being summoned, which meant she was risking her life. But look what God did, He used her to save the jewish people.

Jesus? Well, He took that walk to the cross to die for us and our sins. Isaiah 53:4-7 says: Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the lord laid on him the sins of us all. He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.

There are so many other people in the bible whose lives we could look at as well, but one thing remains the same. They knew that following God meant meant surrendering and following Him wherever He lead them. On the good days, and the bad days. Up the mountain, but through the valley. To the promised land, but through the wilderness. Never easy, but always worth it.

Sometimes, we might allow fear to creep in...and attempt to run from this walk. 1 Kings 19 talks about how Jezebel sought to kill the prophet Elijah, and he was scared and ran for his life. Verses 9-14 says: There he came to a cave, where he spent the night. But the lord said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Elijah replied, “I have zealously served the lord God Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.” “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
He replied again, “I have zealously served the lord God Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.”

and God told Elijah to leave the place that he had run to, and continue doing the work that He had for him to do. Just like with Elijah, I'm thankful that even when we get scared God will get our attention and call us out of the places that we may attempt to hide. He tells us to keep going and press on with His work, and for that I'm grateful.

So this morning, no matter where God has you, keep going! Your current location is not your final destination. Press on! Amen.

I write and read these devotionals every other Sunday morning, during WBRU's (95.5FM) morning gospel show. Be sure to tune in!

Show Your Scars Devotional

John 20 talks about the happens after Jesus' resurrection. At this point Jesus had already appeared to some of the disciples, and I want to focus on verses 24-31.

They say: But Thomas, one of the twelve [disciples], who was called Didymus (the twin), was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples kept telling him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the marks of the nails, and put my finger into the nail prints, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.” 26 Eight days later His disciples were again inside the house, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, though the doors had been barred, and stood among them and said, “Peace to you.”27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and put out your hand and place it in My side. Do not be unbelieving, but [stop doubting and] believe.” 28 Thomas answered Him, “My Lord and my God!”29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, do you now believe? Blessed [happy, spiritually secure, and favored by God] are they who did not see [Me] and yet believed [in Me].” 30 There are also many other signs (attesting miracles) that Jesus performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;31 but these have been written so that you may believe [with a deep, abiding trust] that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), the Son of God; and that by believing [and trusting in and relying on Him] you may have life in His name.

I've heard this story so many times, and every time the focus seems to be on Thomas and his doubt. I was recently listening to one of my favorite podcasts by Elevation Church  (specifically the "No More Nails" sermon by Pastor Steven Furtick) recently, and the Pastor spoke a lot about the importance of Jesus showing His scars. That really spoke to me, because so often people are afraid to reveal their scars. Talk about their hurt. Reveal their wounds. They mask their pain, and keep it pushing the best way that they know how. I'm not saying that everybody needs to know your business, it's definitely important to discern who actually wants to help, and who just wants the tea (ask the kids say, for the rest of y'all that means the gossip). Because of this, a lot of people suffer and struggle in silence.

Yes even in church, even church folk.

One thing that I've found though, is the more time I spent trying to fix things myself, heal myself, all I managed to do was prolong my healing process. God alone has been, and continues to be my healer.

But anyways, back to these scars. A lot of times people don't like to show theirs, because it reminds them about what they've been through. How that wound felt, and what caused it. The scar seems just as ugly as the process, and instead of reclaiming their power and possibly helping somebody else heal by telling their testimony...they hide the scars. Because scars are flaws right? Who could bare to be so human and imperfect.

But then, we look at Jesus. The Only perfect Person to walk the face of this earth....and even He revealed His scars. In doing so He testified to what God had done, and encouraged Thomas who had been struggling with doubts. What if we too revealed our scars, to testify about what God has healed us from? How many others could we encourage?

Revelation 12:11 says: And they overcame and conquered him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, for they did not love their life and renounce their faith even when faced with death

It's only fair, that in my encouraging you to reveal your scars that I show you mine. I've probably talked about it here before, I'm not really sure...but as a teenager I struggled with depression for a few years. God pulled me out. I'd never been in that place again, until I recently was dealing with a lot of things...and felt myself slipping back there. This time though, I knew immediately to trust in, lean on, and cry out to God. I literally felt Him pull me out. Depression, at least to me, feels like your drowning. And when I felt God pull me out, I thought to myself: this must be what Peter felt like, when Jesus pulled him out of the water.

If you're not familiar with that story, Jesus was walking on the water to the disciples in the middle of a storm. Peter started walking to Jesus, but the moment that he took his eyes off of Him he started to drown. Peter cried out to Jesus, and He took his hand and pulled him out (Read Matthew 14:22-33 for the full story).

The real question is: Are you willing to let God use all of you? Even the scarred parts?

So this morning, don't be afraid to tell your testimony and show your scars. God will use you to encourage others to heal, if you let Him.

Amen.
